October 14-20 was Teen Read Week, a national literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Association, a division of the American Library Association. In honor of TRW, Belgrade Library invited teens from the middle school and high school to submit scary stories to our first-ever writing contest. We received many quality entries which were judged by Hannah Stiff (Belgrade News), Chrysti Smith (author of Verbivore’s Feast and radioshow host of “Chrysti the Wordsmith”), and Rebekah Kamp (BCL librarian). The winning stories were “Dream of Wonderland” by Sierra Mack and “They Come at Night” by Leah Pope. Winners received Barnes & Noble gift cards, 6 pounds of gummy bears, and a copy of Wreck this Journal by Keri Smith. Five other authors were recognized for their creative stories, Julia Brunette, Alexandra Gardner, Tara Gardner, Candace Harbeck, and Lizzie Vosler.
