In November and December, the Belgrade Community Library is celebrating the extraordinary beauty of writing and sending letters. We invite you to join us in an exploration of thousands of years of history through letters sent in love and battle, business and play, and to expand your own understanding of what a letter can be. What ideas might start if periodically a small wave of handwritten notes washed out into the world from Belgrade?
Come visit our letter-writing pavilions in the Library during the month of November. Bring donations of cards and stationary that have been sitting reproachfully in your drawer, and start fresh, surrounded by inspiration and assistance. Reference books and other materials will be available.
History of Letters
Saturday, November 10th at 1:00 pm and Tuesday, November 20th at 6:30 pm
Join Lorca Smetana for an exploration of letters through history and for some help getting the letters lurking in the back of your head onto the page and into the mailbox. We’ll be exploring letters in history and in literature as well as playing with pens and ink, inkwells and sealing wax. We’ll work with ways to start letters and to finish them, and the myriad ways to make them uniquely personal. You will meet homing pigeons, the world’s first airmail service, and we’ll open up fresh possibilities in envelopes, writing materials and delivery. This workshop is designed to inspire and to remove obstacles to the richness of a letter-writing life. All are welcome!
